Icebergs

The Nuuk Fiord is the second largest fjord system in the world and a great place to spot icebergs! We built our camp deep in the Nuuk fiord, near the glaciers that fill our fiords with icebergs, ensuring that icebergs would be a part of the experience when travelling to, and staying in, our camp.

The boat trip to Camp Kangiusaq is in itself a fantastic experience, equivalent to an Icefiord Cruise.

Wildlife

In the Summer, the Kangiusaq fjord is full of life. Wild caribou roam nearby, following their well trodden trails worn into the landscape over several generations. A rich birdlife is found on land and in the ocean, with two birdcliffs with multiple species of breeding seabirds within a few minutes of the camp by boat. In the Icefiord beyond, seals can sometimes be seen swimming amongst the icebergs.

Our fiords are also home to one of the largest mammals on the planet -  the Humpback Whale. From June to September, the humpback whale is a common sight in the Nuuk Fiord, you may even get a chance to see them on the boat tour to or from Camp Kangiusaq.

Hiking

There are several options for good hikes near our camp, check out the dedicated page here.

We guide some shorter tours of around 2 hrs and some longer tours of around 5hrs. The longer tours are only possible for guests staying 2 or more nights. If you'd like to go for a solo hike, our camp staff can give you an idea of where to go, and will provide a GPS and satellite communication equipment.

If you are up for a bigger hiking adventure, check out our Butterfly Lake Expedition.

Paddleboarding

The camp has icebergs in its bay, and we have several kayaks, paddleboards, and dry suits in different sizes. You are welcome to join one of our guided tours, even if you have never tried it before.

Northern Lights

Camp Kangiusaq is a great place to experience the northern lights as we have extremely little light pollution.

The northern lights can be seen from around the middle of August until the camp closes on the 15th of September.

Birdwatching

The Kangiusaq fiord has its own little bird cliffs. In fact, it's the southernmost spot in Greenland where cormorants breed. There are also black guillemots and a number of different gull species, but, perhaps most excitingly, it is the only place in the Nuuk fiord where the white Gyr Falcon nests.

The Gyr Falcon is an elusive bird with a large terrority, but known to nest here. It is said to be a great spirit that resides on one of the mountains.

Fishing

Join us for a combined cruise and fishing trip in our small motorboat. We have lifejackets for everyone, but advise that you bring your own warm clothes with you. We use traditional handlines to catch cod which we serve in our fish soup.

Learn from our guides how to clean and filet your fish.

We also have fishing rods that you are free to use at any time to fish from land, where you can catch cod, and possibly Arctic Char.
