Hiking & Expeditions

Join us on a variety of hikes near and around the camp! Hiking here is not like anywhere else in the world. The area does not have any marked trails (the only trails you'll find are wildlife highways) and the likelihood of meeting other hikers is next to none.

Camp Kangiusaq offers several hiking opportunities, with guided tours of between 2 and 22 km.

For example; we have a guided hike up to our lake. Here we have a great view back to the camp, and up into the Kangiusaq valley. The hike is approximately 3 km, with 150 m of elevation gain.

You can also go on your own hikes. The camp will provide you with a GPS and safety equipment, as well as ideas of where to go.

We guide some shorter tours of around 2 hrs and some longer tours of around 5hrs. The longer tours are only possible for guests staying 2 or more nights.

If you are up for a bigger hiking adventure, we have you covered as well!

Wilderness and Reindeer trails

We leave camp Kangiusaq after breakfast, and head out into the back-country.

We will follow reindeer trails, ascending through the landscape far into the wilderness. There are great chances of encountering wildlife, such as reindeer, ptarmigan, arctic foxes, arctic hares or perhaps the great northern diver, with its beautiful, enchanting song, which nests on the lakes in the backcountry.

There are plenty of great spots to eat our lunch along the way, and to cool our feet in one of the crystal-clear lakes, or to take a refreshing dip if we feel up to the challenge.

Butterfly lake and Glaciers
After lunch we will continue our gentle ascent to Butterfly Lake itself.

Butterfly Lake is situated at an altitude of 450 meters, and, if the weather gods are with us, we’ll be treated to views all the way to the Greenland Ice Sheet and to Narssap Sermia, one of the vast glaciers feeding the Nuuk Fjord with countless icebergs.

Wild Camping and 'Midnight sun'
We set up camp in the late afternoon and enjoy our long bright summer evening and the incredible natural surroundings.

A quirk of our time zone means that we have 'midnight sun' from the 22nd of May until the 22nd of July, where the sun sets for a few short hours, but after midnight.

New views on the return hike
We’ll then start the return hike to Camp Kangiusaq. If the weather allows, we’ll take a different route back, offering new vantage points, with the Icefiord to the East, and the valley we followed on day one to the West. Lunch will either be enjoyed along the way or as a late buffet lunch back at the camp, depending on our progress.

Back to Camp kangiusaq
When we arrive back at Camp Kangiusaq, you’ll check back into the glamping tents.

The afternoon is yours to spend as you like in the camp, enjoying the included activities or taking a well-earned rest.
